Why are you interested in healthcare?

My interest in healthcare culminated post college when I worked on the financial statement audits for a few multinational payers. This experience illustrated how complex and unique the health care system is from a business perspective.

During a transition in my career, I served as a legislative aide, where I saw firsthand constituent’s needs for timely, affordable and quality healthcare. Simultaneously, the need for quality healthcare that the legislative body was fighting for became a personal issue in my own home as my mother was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Throughout her ordeal, our family experienced uncoordinated care, lackluster quality and environments that were not patient centered. Seeing my mother suffer through sub-optimum treatment ignited my passion to improve the healthcare system.

As a trained accountant and CPA traditional routes to achieve this goal aren’t plentiful, but I was able to combine my professional interests and personal passion when I took a role at The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Center (CMMI). CMMI is mandated out of Section 3021 of the Affordable Care Act and is charged with testing innovative payment and service delivery models to reduce program expenditures, while preserving or enhancing the quality of care provided.

How did you get to business school?

I wanted to pursue a top program that would help me develop and deliver business management skills that would be useful in both the public and private sector. I also wanted to build my professional network of like-minded colleagues while also sharpening my technical skills. My formal education in accounting is well suited to focus on the financial aspects of the marketplace. However, I also want to take a more holistic view of business which is what made the Executive MBA program interesting to me.

Why did you choose to attend the Yale School of Management?

I chose the Yale School of Management (SOM) Executive MBA program because of its fundamental premise of preparing leaders for business and society. SOM takes great pride in producing successful leaders through a rigorous set of core classes and raw case studies. The school also emphasizes the importance of being socially responsible and ensuring that we are giving back to humanity, as we climb the proverbial ladder of success.
