SUMMARY:Social Bonds as a Pooled Financing Mechanism to Address Social Drivers of Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:This webinar introduces a new S4A study investigating whether a novel type of social bond can pool resources across multiple competing health plans and create stable\, long-term financing for interventions that address social determinants of health. The bond’s design would allow multiple health plans participating in Minnesota’s Medicaid program to invest collectively in a fund that finances community-based interventions targeting social issues such as food insecurity\, housing instability\, transportation\, and structural racism.

SUMMARY:The 3rd Johns Hopkins Symposium on Healthcare Operations: Building Resilient Healthcare Supply Chains for the Next Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The Johns Hopkins Symposium on Healthcare Operations (JHSHO)\, started in 2016\, features global thought leaders from both academia and practice. The third symposium\, sponsored by the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative\, focuses on supply chain resilience\, an urgent mandate emerging from painful and teachable moments during the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThis symposium features pioneering supply chain scholars — including Willy Shih (Harvard)\, David Simchi-Levi (MIT)\, Christopher S. Tang (UCLA)\, and Sridhar Tayur (Carnegie Mellon) — and government speakers from CDC (Maryann D’Alessandro)\, FDA (Tammy R. Beckham)\, and HHS (John Fredenberg and Bryan Heartsfield) to spotlight cutting-edge research in supply chain resilience and develop pandemic-proof supply chain solutions

SUMMARY:The Changing Market of Biosimilars
DESCRIPTION:Biologics have revolutionized the treatment of care\, but often at high prices. The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA) of 2010 created a pathway for approval and market launch of “biosimilar” products with the goal of introducing affordable alternatives and enhancing competition. As the biosimilar market evolves with new biosimilars coming to market\, it is essential to consider patient\, provider\, payer\, manufacturer and policy dynamics that influence uptake and affordability. \nThis panel discussion\, led by MILI and Prime Therapeutics leadership\, will introduce the biosimilars landscape and discuss coverage and pricing of biosimilars\, provider-level factors influencing uptake\, legislative challenges\, and manufacturer perspectives.

This is a great venue for graduate students to showcase their leadership\, critical thinking\, creativity\, and network with other future healthcare leaders—in addition to winning a prize! Graduate students from top-tier universities (to be confirmed) across the United States will be invited to participate. \nThe case competition also provides an opportunity for finalist teams from participating universities to attend UNC’s annual Healthcare Conference (held virtually this year)—providing additional networking opportunities and a chance to attend workshops and panels led by industry leaders. \nAm I eligible to participate?\nGraduate students across disciplines (business\, public health\, pharmacy\, medicine\, nursing\, dentistry\, etc.) are encouraged to participate. Each team must have 4-5 graduate students in current programs spanning at least two disciplines (dual-degree students may fulfill this requirement). \nHow is the case competition structured?\nThe UNC Healthcare Case Competition will include two virtual rounds: \nInternal Round – UNC will host its own internal competition to identify its finalist team. If preferred\, other universities may nominate their finalist team without hosting an internal competition.\nClick here to register for the internal round! \nFinal External Round – One finalist team from each participating university will present their case solution. SUMMARY:Building Wealth\, Building Health
DESCRIPTION:The connection between wealth and health was never more evident than during the pandemic. As the temporary expansion of the child tax credit lifts millions of families out of poverty\, policymakers are debating more permanent measures to build wealth in disadvantaged communities\, such as “baby bonds” and guaranteed income. The impact on health and health care could be dramatic. This panel will discuss the evidence surrounding wealth and health\, how health care providers can address their patients’ financial needs\, cash benefits as an alternative to health insurance expansion\, and real-world experiences in building wealth as a way to improve health. \nSupported by the Charles C. Leighton\, MD Memorial Lecture Fund.

SUMMARY:When Health Care and Law Enforcement Overlap: Policy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Injuries and illnesses requiring emergency medical care often attract responses from law enforcement\, and law enforcement officers are frequently present in hospitals. Anyone seeking emergency care might encounter law enforcement in the hospital\, but this is particularly true for survivors of violent crime\, incarcerated patients\, survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence\, patients experiencing psychiatric emergencies\, undocumented immigrants\, and individuals with substance use disorders. How do individual health\, public safety\, legal rights\, and ethics intersect? Standardized policies and practices are needed to navigate professional conflicts and balance health and safety concerns. \nCo-hosted by Penn LDI and the Penn Department of Emergency Medicine\, this multidisciplinary symposium will bring together frontline providers\, legal experts\, health care workers\, social scientists\, and researchers to explore these issues and expand the conversation on law enforcement and clinical care. \nCo-sponsored by Penn MedicineTrauma Center\, Penn Injury Science Center\, and Campaign for Community at the Penn Provost Office.

SUMMARY:Drug Pricing: Policy and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Despite bipartisan agreement that the high cost of drugs must be addressed\, proposals to reform the U.S. drug pricing system have languished for years. There’s no shortage of ideas on what to do—Medicare price negotiation\, greater price transparency\, international reference pricing\, patent exclusivity changes\, and price controls all have their advocates. But there’s no consensus on how to strike the right balance between making drugs affordable now\, and preserving financial incentives for developing new drugs in the future. Join our expert panel as they discuss the policy options for drug pricing\, the appropriate roles of government and markets\, and prospects for reform in the current political environment.

SUMMARY:How the COVID-19 Pandemic Has Changed Health Care Delivery
DESCRIPTION:The Covid-19 pandemic has changed how we live\, shop\, study\, work — and how we experience healthcare. We have witnessed a dramatic expansion of virtual healthcare\, additionally spurred by advances in science and technology. What innovations are visible in the horizon? What areas are the most promising for additional changes? Are there any potential downsides?\n\nLarry Zicklin (BBA ‘57) discusses how the pandemic is changing healthcare with Dr. Kenneth Berkowitz\, Special Advisor\, Veterans Health Administration National Center for Ethics in Health Care and Associate Professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine\, who will share insights from his frontline experience in the pandemic and from his ethics perspective\, and with Zicklin School Prof. Alex Mills\, whose research interests include how the healthcare system responds to disruptions.

SUMMARY:Global challenges\, local contexts and the COVID-19 Vaccine
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we will first set the context by assessing the current situation regarding COVID-19 vaccines and variants. We will then review the public health response and its challenges: vaccine hesitancy\, social norms\, beliefs and health decision-making. \nIn global settings\, particularly in Africa\, vaccine roll-out has been slow and uptake has been less than desired. We will review key issues in the roll-out\, the impact of social norms and beliefs\, and health seeking behaviour – and examples of how these challenges have been overcome. Finally we have a look into fast-track innovations for COVID (and pandemic-) preparedness and management/control. Innovative approaches from around the world across the spectrum of care (prevention\, risk reduction\, screening\, diagnosis\, treatment\, and long-term care) and the role of global (e.g. CEPI\, COVAX)\, regional and country institutions
